CDE - History-Social Science Framework
The History-Social Science Framework for California Public Schools merges the content standards and analysis skills, characteristics, goals and strands, course descriptions, and appendices to support the implementation of a standards-based history-social science program. Throughout the framework, educators will be able to see the connection between curriculum, standards, and skills, and find useful examples for teaching history-social science.
The History-Social Science Framework for California Public Schools highlights the following distinguishing characteristics for building an exemplary history-social science program:

- Proposes an integrated and correlated approach to teaching history-social science.
- Emphasizes the importance of history as a story well told.
- Emphasizes the importance of enriching the study of history with literature.
- Proposes enrichment of the curriculum for grades 1-3.
- Emphasizes studying major historical events in depth.
- Proposes a sequential curriculum-knowledge and skills built upon K-12.
- Incorporates a multi-cultural perspective.
- Increases the place of world history in the curriculum to 3 years.
- Emphasizes the importance of ethics and civic virtue.
- Encourages the development of civic and democratic values.
- Supports the frequent study and discussion of the fundamental principles of the Bill of Rights and Constitution.
- Encourages teachers to present controversial issues honestly and accurately within historical/contemporary context.
- Acknowledges the importance of religion in human history.
- Proposes the inclusion of critical thinking skills at every grade level.
- Supports a variety of content-appropriate teaching methods.
- Provides opportunities for students' participation in school/community service programs and activities.
