The Planning Grid can be used in collaborative planning sessions as a tool for aligning activities and assessments to skills. The organization of the document can support discussion about striking a balance between content and skills, integration of skills in lesson/unit planning, spiraling nature of skills throughout the grade levels, and assessing skills, as well as content. A benefit of this planning tool is that it engages teachers in a discussion about the value of skills- within and across content areas.
