--From Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools, Educating for Democracy
Historically, the need for civic education to promote civic virtue has been an underpinning of democratic societies. Civic education takes place both formally and informally within the public education structure, aided by community groups and organizations that support the development of civic values of our students. A national and statewide movement aims to increase the level of civic instruction and emphasis in our K-12 system.

The California Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools (CMS) seeks to support the civic mission of schools and help teachers implement the research-based promising approaches to teach civics content, foster discussion of issues, simulations, and service learning activities linked to the curriculum. Many teachers and students throughout San Diego County are involved in CMS-sponsored programs, such as We the People Constitutional Competitions, Mock Trial and Project Citizen programs.
