English Language Development state-approved standards are the onramp to the English Language Arts standards. As English learners progress from beginning to higher proficiency levels, they acquire the concepts and skills to be able to access the state's rigorous ELA standards. Many ELD standards at the early advanced and advanced levels contain working similar to or exactly the same as ELA standards, reflecting this very goal. The intent is for English learners to progress through the ELD levels to acquire the necessary English language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking to function proficiently at grade levels.

Map of Standards for English Learners
The Map of Standards for English Learners: Integrating Instruction and Assessment of English Language Development and English Language Arts Standards, developed by WestEd, is a standards-based tool for classrooms with mixed English ability students. It pairs the California English Language Development (ELD) standards and the state's English Language Arts standards. Administrators and teachers can readily see the match of these two related sets of standards within a grade span.
