Graduation Requirements

Algebra 1 Requirement for Graduation

CDE - Graduation Requirements

California Education Code for Algebra I Requirement for Graduation - PDF

Starting with the class of 2004, completion of Algebra I is a mandated requirement to receive a high school diploma in the state of California. The California Department of Education (CDE) and the State Board of Education (SBE) believe that all students can meet the requirement by providing them with teachers who are knowledgeable in the content area, implementing differentiated instruction, providing varied ways of demonstrating competency, creating additional time slots for learning, and developing other strategies.

California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) Requirement for Graduation

CDE - CAHSEE Program Notes and Legal Updates

Beginning with the class of 2006, all students must satisfy the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) requirement to receive a public high school diploma in California. Local school boards cannot overrule this state graduation requirement. However, local boards are authorized to grant students with an individualized education program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan a waiver of the requirement to pass the part(s) of the CAHSEE on which modifications were used and the equivalent of a passing score was earned as set forth in Education Code section 60851(c). Questions about the CAHSEE requirement should be directed to the California Department of Education (CDE) CAHSEE Office at (916) 445-9449.
