Observing and Discussing Mathematics: A Guide to Powerful Instruction

Observing and Discussing Mathematics: A Guide to Powerful Instruction - PDF

The Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools identifies eight Goals for Teachers that can:

  • Provide the "Big Ideas" for questions to guide observations and discussions of mathematics education at the classroom, school site, or district level
  • Serve as prompts for developing questions that can be used in grade-level classroom observations
  • Serve as an organizer to focus conferences

Based on the Goals for Teachers and the CAHSEE Compact Goals, this observation guide was developed to facilitate classroom observations. The guide includes recommendations on how to use it, questions to ask, and ways to adapt it for different settings.
