Developed as a supplementary resource to support instruction of CAHSEE Prep and Getting Ready for Algebra, Math Language That Works is designed to assist teachers in planning instruction for mathematics vocabulary, concept development, and assessment.

In order for students to understand the mathematical concepts, underlying principles, and connections necessary to master the content standards addressed in CAHSEE Prep and Getting Ready for Algebra, they must understand and use the academic language and vocabulary contained in the standards to explain and perform mathematical operations.

All students, especially English learners and struggling students, will benefit from a deeper understanding of the academic language and mathematics vocabulary essential for mastering the mathematics standards and content.

Math Vocabulary Lesson Templates

The Math Vocabulary Lesson Templates are blank strategy templates intended for teacher lesson planning. Teachers can create effective lessons for explicitly teaching mathematics vocabulary. Math Vocabulary Lesson Templates include instructions, graphic organizers, and lesson templates for:

  • Instruction of new words
  • Developing concepts and word relationships
  • Determining students' prior knowledge of terms
